Meteorology Program

Academic Advising

Policies and Procedures

Students are responsible for registering for the required courses in the proper sequence to acquire the meteorology degree. This page is designed to provide information and assist you in accomplishing this.

The Meteorology faculty will serve as your major advisors. The faculty are available for individual advising appointments, provided you have read all of the documentation on this page. Students should create their own plan of courses to sign up for on a semester-by-semester basis, and review this plan with their major advisor. Drs. Baxter, Mower, and Orf are all available to serve as major advisors. Students are strongly encouraged to seek out advising on courses to select in order to complete General Education requirements, as detailed on the Academic Advising and Assistance Office web site.

The Meteorology program is highly structured, meaning that certain courses must be successfully completed in order to register for subsequent courses. All prerequisite courses will be enforced by the registration system. In addition, certain meteorology courses may only be offered in either the fall or spring semesters. Currently, no meterology courses are offered in the summer. Students must earn a minimum GPA of 2.0 in courses required for the meteorology major in order to graduate.

Sample Degree Map

For your convenience, the faculty have prepared sample degree maps, one for those starting with Precalculus, and another for those starting with Calculus I. Completing these courses in this order would satisfy all requirements for graduation. The Meteorology, Math, and Physics courses must be taken in this order. It is up to you when other Major, University Program, Competency, and B.S. Plan B requirements are taken.

For students beginning with either College Algebra or Intermediate Algebra, five years of study will be required to complete all degree requirements.

Required Courses

General Education Program, Competencies, and B.S. Plan B Requirements

In addition, students are responsible for satisfying all general education requirements, including courses in the University Program and Core Competency requirements (Freshman and Advanced Composition, Oral English, and Mathematics). Students must earn a minimum GPA of 2.0 in their University Program courses in order to graduate.

Lastly, students need to complete additional requirements known as "Plan B" courses in order to receive a Bachelor of Science degree. This amounts to taking 6 hours worth of Social Science courses tha are not taken as part of the University Program. Please see the current Academic Bulletin to determine eligible courses.

Signing Your Major

Students must declare a major prior to completing 56 credit hours. The Meteorology faculty will only sign majors for students in the second semester of their second year at CMU. If you are a student transferring to CMU with 56 credit hours, we will sign your major during your first year here.

Choosing a Minor

Students majoring in Meteorology are required to also minor in Mathematics. This minor will be achieved simply by taking the courses required for the meteorology degree. Students must sign up for this Mathematics minor with any faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at some point prior to graduation.

Students often elect to take an additional minor. In the past, these have included Geographic Information Systems, Broadcast and Cinematic Arts, Computer Science, and Economics. Consultation with your major advisor can assist you in selecting an additional minor.
